Helping build confidence and skills a driver for Amber

Variety the key for new team leader

Amber Sim’s Career is the perfect example of the opportunities available at Kurrajong – in her six years with the organisation she has tried her hand at a range of roles, working her way across the organisation as she developed her skills and experience.

Joining the team as a support worker in 2017, after discovering a passion for helping people with disabilities and completing her Cert III in Individual Support (disability), her ability and passion for the role were quickly demonstrated and 18 months later she was promoted to the role of facilitator when a new Kurrajong group home opened. This led to further facilitator opportunities with other group homes, before she was given the opportunity to step in to a maternity leave team leader vacancy. This was followed by time holding a newly created position, client care coordinator, before again being promoted, this time into her current permanent role as team leader.

It has been a fairly meteoric rise, but one driven by an innate desire to help people living with disability. No two days are the same and each client is unique in their own needs – thinking outside the box to meet those needs makes the role not only interesting, but also immensely rewarding, Amber says.

“The thing I enjoy most about my job is being able to help those in need, whether that’s been building a client’s confidence, or skills.

I enjoy being able to use my creativity to meet each client’s needs. During my time within Kurrajong I have been given the opportunity to be challenged to work in various roles and teams across Supported Living, and I thoroughly enjoy new challenges that may arise.”

When she’s not busy helping clients live their best lives through Kurrajong, Amber loves spending time with her border collie, hanging out with family and friends, and heading to the gym.
