Meet Emma Ryan

Social butterfly Emma Ryan keeps a full calendar. Like most 26 year olds, Emma can’t wait for the weekends. Her days are filled with going to the movies, tin pin bowling, club with friends and sewing groups. She’s always visiting with friends or having them over, and she is happy to impress with her cooking (she cooks a mean spag bol!).

Although she loves to be social, Emma also likes to simply take a walk, spend some quiet time making pom-poms or just being at home where she happily lives alone.

How Kurrajong helps Emma:

Emma has Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome. For eight years, she has been part of the Kurrajong family.

She works three days a week folding sheets at Kurrajong Laundry in Narrandera and one day a week, she is kept busy with Kurrajong group activities like literacy, numeracy and team building.

Recently, Kurrajong helped Emma and her family to access an NDIS plan. Earlier this year Kurrajong supported Emma to move out of home and into her own unit, which is one of the four units purpose built and owned by Kurrajong in Narrandera.

Through Kurrajong Supported Living, Emma receives help at home one day per week to take care of cleaning and meal planning. And every morning and night, she also receives one-on-one support to help with personal care and getting ready for her day, cooking and generally maintaining her busy schedule.

Through Kurrajong Supported Living, Emma has become more independent and her Mum and Dad now have peace of mind that she is living safely in her unit, developing greater self-confidence and broadening her choices and activities in life.

“I like Kurrajong – I really like all the staff. They help me out at home and I love living by myself. I can do what I want when I want.”
